答案B。想说的是B中的he had been用过去时是不是也可以的？感觉很多时候过去完成时都可以换成过去式。求教牛牛，在哪些情况下过去完成时是不能换成过去式的？

这个的关键词在于for,for,since等是完成时的标志，所以是必须要用完成时的。
过去完成时是说过去的过去，在这道题了，previous to when...died in 1770,把过去之过去这种意思表达的很清楚了已经。
而一般过去时只是强调过去的动作，比如：i had breakfast at 5 o' clock this morning.
如果要强调过去动作对现在的影响，可以用现在完成时，比如：i've been to beijing.就是指，我之前去过北京，对现在（比如我现在了解北京）有影响。
