C scientists have gathered evidence suggesting that complex life-forms emerged much earlier than 正确

E scientists have gathered evidence which suggests a much earlier emergence of complex life-forms than that

C项中的than previously thought，应该是scientists previously thought吧，而than前面的主语是complex life-forms，这样还可以省略scientists吗？？

E项中的which有问题吗？看到一种说法是"that修饰限定性定语从句，which修饰非限定性定语从句",不知道这句话对不对？

E项最后的that是不是有问题？that指代前面的.. emergence，所以变成emergence previously thought，逻辑意思不合理，不知道这样想对吗？

1、借用bat版主的回答：c选项等同于【同一事物在不同时期不同状态的比较】
Something is much earlier/ easier than sb. previously believed/ thought. 这是一种约定俗成的比较表达方式。
2、一般来说which都是非限定修饰的，要放在逗号后面，但是which前面如果加上介词则不一定
3、E选项中用that指代emergency就变成了：scientists have gathered evidence which suggests a much earlier emergence of complex life-forms than the emergence previously thought. 变成了两个emergency的比较，不合句意。而且既然是指代同一个emergency需要用it而不是that。

我也有同样的困惑，看了你的解释明白了。谢谢~
是不是可以这样理解，than previously thought可以理解为一种习惯用语。

请问Something is much earlier/ easier than sb. previously believed/ thought. 中的sb是可以省略的么？要是省略了可能被认为是Something is much earlier/ easier than (sth.) be previously believed/ thought. C选项中没有sb 但是又没有be 理解不能啊~ 还望大神指点
