E		but instead wintered in Kingston in order to rest and build up desperately needed supplies for themselves. I looked it up in the dictionary, army is a group noun and can be used as singular noun and plural noun, the answer to this question is B. what is the difference between B and C?

Gmat好像一般只根据army（名词本身）的单复数来定，除非另有暗示。

一般but rather前面要有否定词，longman:

not ... but rather ...
used to say that one thing is not true but a different thing is true
The problem is not their lack of funding, but rather their lack of planning

这题有几个疑问 1：army是单复数同形词，在这题里怎么分辨是算复数还是单数？
2：instead和rather都能连接句子（OG12 50题），应该不用补出主语了吧？

but为连词，加一个副词instead, 所以but instead 可以接句子

but rather 前面一般都要有not

but（介词）+名词，不可以加instead
eg.prep08-208.(GWD-11-40)
