In some countries, television and radio programs are carefully censored for offensive language and behavior. In other countries, there is little or no censorship. Here we are facing a question that to what extent the government or any other group should be able to censor television or radio programs. Obviously, anything too extremely goes to one end or the other may inevitably result in consequences that are too ultra, hence my opinion is that there should be censorship conducted by the government or other regulatory group when the language or behavior conveyed in the media programs contain materials that are of harmful aspersion or deliberate distortion to mislead the public, but the censorship should not go to such extreme extent as to become a burden on the freedom of speech.
First, if the media programs are poisoned with heretical religious opinions aimed at disrupting the harmony in the society and agitate innocent people to go against the main stream of our government, without effective censorship from the regulatory authorities, we would be giving antisocial elements a “green express” to do whatever they want without getting punished, the justice would be losing grounds to evil without even attempting to fight for the right, the public who are exposed to such programs would inevitably be poisoned with disturbed ideas or even conduct heretical behavior imitating what the media has expressed, and finally the stable society is jeopardized. In such cases, government intervenes such as authorized censorship to go through the program materials before they even get the chance to be exposed to the public would stop the vicious and hence defense the regular operation of our system. One successful intervene carried out by our government could be seen in the case of Falun Gong, which was a heretical religion going against our Communist Party and once succeeded in agitating people even to commit self-burning. After the government cut them off from the public media, they gradually lost the green express they once depended on and died out eventually.
However, should the regulatory intervene go to the extreme extent to ban any religious express from the media program, healthy religious belief and propaganda would be sentenced to the same punishment without any wrong doing, an unfair conduction for both the ones who tend to express healthy ideas and the ones who have a right to get to know these ideas.
To sum up, to what extent the government should regulate the media for offensive language and behavior is a careful decision deserving thorough consideration about whether the programs would have unhealthy impact on the public that would lead to harmful conductions. However, given the concept is regular and no hidden malevolence should be noticed, the government should protect the freedom of speech and foster an ambiance in which people could communicate freely.
