我记得when从句的时态是主将从现主过从过。然后曼哈顿5里面P267有个改错：
When he swam across the lake, he lay down on the far shore and relaxed in the sunshine until he was thoroughtly dry.
曼哈顿说这是错的 正确的是：
When he had swam across the lake, he lay down on the far shore and relaxed in the sunshine until he was thoroughtly dry.

你可以注意一下这句话中的now 和currently，显然意思重复了。
你举的第一个例子：显然是先游完泳，然后才lay down and relaxed，如果同时进行，逻辑不合理。
你举的第二个例子：great ice sheets只能说明现在不存在于in the temperate areas，但是不知道之前存在的时间点，所以没有必要用过去完成时。因为不清楚在LA开始研究的时候，那个东西是否还存在。
使用过去完成时有两种情况，一种是出现了一般过去时，并且强调时间的先后顺序的情况下，可用；另一种，虽然没有出现一般过去式，但是有过去的时间来显示“过去的过去”，这样也可以。比如earlier in that year
GMAT中，并不是出现了一般过去式就一定要采用过去完成时来表示时间的先后顺序的。
支持LS。请看这个句子The results of the company’s cost-cutting measures are evident in its profits, which increased 5 percent during the first 3 months of this year after it fell over the last two years. OG说时态不对，虽然这里也用到了after。关于这一点，我不同意manhattan
