as well as 不是完全并列的，其实是处于劣势的平行，有点“也能”的意思

你那句话里，地面和天空是完全并列，and表示完全并列。

as well as 还有一个特点就是如果你去掉 "as well as xxxxx"这部分，句子意思没出入（你就是少点额外信息而已）
但and链接的东西，如果你砍掉了，句子很多时候就意思都变了。你的例子里，如果去掉天空的部分，光靠地面的观测，你是不能得到新的insight的
