关于-ed分词修饰对象之迷惑

The knowledge that scientists know about dinosaur branis comes from studies of the bony house of the brain,located in the back of the skull,that is,the cranium.

姑且不说the knowledge that scientists know表达不简洁，单就划线部分的过去分词短语的修饰对象，我有如下问题：

一般而言，过去分词作为修饰语，紧跟在其修饰对象的后面，即上句，划线部分应该修饰的是brain.但是PREP语法笔记上说，这个过去分词结构修饰不清，是不是它也能修饰the cranium呢？为什么会造成这种错误？是句子结构，即划线部分位置的原因？还是逻辑的原因？

我觉得有修饰不清的感觉，因为涉及所有格形式，所有格经常可以跨越修饰，这个句中，located是修饰brain，bony house or studies

umm...修饰是要从逻辑意思理解的，这里located逻辑上无法修饰studies和brain，因为这两这不可能located in the back of the skull，所以只修饰bony house
