You can see this is pretty parallel with "owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults".

的确。这题大家要注意个有意思的现象，通常我们说and连接任何成本做主语，谓语都不许是复数。（除了war and peace这类特例）；另外本题也是一个极品特例了：

doing1 and doing2 N is...... 而且居然it指代这两个分词短语....

个人见解，这两个分词共用一个宾语N, 才可理解为单数。以下结构必须用复数（OG上有一个例子，我没时间找了，有兴趣的同学可以找来）

doing1 N1 and doing2 N2 are.....
