过去完成时使用的条件：
1.时间点是过去的过去，文中有比较明显的时间标志。从时间轴上来看不能出现时间断点，比如一个时间点由过去完成时表示过去的过去，另一个时间点却直接用现在时表示当前，这样就出现了时间轴的断点，需要中间添加上一个一般过去的时间点。
2.表示过去的过去已经完成的动作，暗示在文中提到的一般过去的时间点，该动作已经不再进行。
本题，1783表示一个过去的时间点，而become too ill一定是一个过去的过去已经发生的情况，这样从逻辑上才能导致1783年was discharged。So,这里用过去完成时是没有问题的。
