The author asserts that the best teachers are those who expect their students to challenge popular ideas rather than accept them. While it is true that one big target of our education is to teach students with popular ideas as preparation of enter society, my view is that, to challenge popular ideas, rather than to accept them is more important to get our students well prepared for complicated reality, and therefore I strongly agree with author’s assertion.
The main reason for my view is that, good teachers teach not only knowledge and ideas, but also, or even more importantly, the independent way of thinking, especially the attitudes towards popular ideas. If students always take popular ideas as granted, or even use as a bible to instruct the way they analyze new problems, they can hardly make any innovations, or any new findings due to the limitation. Furthermore, in history some popular ideas were even proved to be totally misleading, thus hinder the development of science, new technology and society. For example, in 19th century it is impossible for human being to fly in the sky in poplar ideas, if at that time everybody just accepted this sounds reasonable idea, we would still need half year to travel from Asia to America.
Another reason is that people who always challenge, rather than accept popular ideas are much more ready to learn new things and solve new problems. , . Admittedly, some might argue that accepting popular ideas good would help better understand current society, hence better integrated into surroundings. However, it is far than enough just to apply popular ideas into complicated reality.
In conclusion, my view is that. Although there are many other which teacher could expect students to fulfill, in order to get students best prepared for complicated ideas and society, the best teachers would teach them how to equip with independent way of thinking towards popular ideas.
