答案是D

Choice A, B, and C are incorrect because a present participial (or –ing) verb must precede flames to form a structure parallel to the phrase making ignition much easier… choice D is correct. Choice E is wordy, unidiomatic, and also awkward in that spreading, although used here as a noun, appears at first to be another present participle that could be modified by more quickly. This is an easy question.

E为什么不对？看上去貌似更平行呀

我把朗文对于make解释为“致使”时的用法，复制下来。

简单看了一下。可以说make sth do,make sth+a, make sb sth。

但好像不能说make sth doing，所以A就不对。

E的错误OG已经解释的很清楚了。

cause sth ___ 空格里是做名词的宾补。哪些词能做宾补呢？动词，名词，形容词(由过去分词变成的特殊形容词，强调状态），现在分词。副词怎么能做名词宾补呢？

你可以说cause the flames spread more quickly. spread more quickly做flames的补语，副词quickly修饰动词spread.

但不能说cause the spreading of the flames more quickly. 副词quickly做动名词spreading补语是不允许。当然，如果副词在不做宾补的时候是可以修饰动名词的。e.g. Quickly spreading of the flames is caused by burning of the enclosed fire.
