这里面我不明白的是those of为什么可以不要？是因为从句意上“它们的物种”就等于它们？

those of指代什么呢?species of others?好像不对的哦，所以E

D的问题如下:

1. taste the hydrocarbons是flies的定语.to taste the hydrocarbons能不能成为flies的定语我不清楚,不过起码会造成歧义,让人认为to taste the hydrocarbons是assisting的状语;

2. 我认为把those of去掉有两种解释:

A. others是名词性物主代词.those of应该就可以省略了.比如说,I dropped his wallet but not mine.就不用I dropped his wallet but not that of mine了.

B. others是代词,指其他物种.再用those of就意思重复了.

个人比较偏向于others作为代词指代其他物种.

嗯，我刚在网上查到一种说法，others= “other +名词”。代词，泛指。后面不能再接名词了。
就是说不存在others’物种的说法。

其实和msuzengli兄说的差不多。总之以后要记住others就什么都没有了。不存在什么those of others
