我认为答案中的 distinguishing their own species from others 比较对象不平行，应该是those of others

习惯用语 assist sb. in doing sth.
others=other species
从逻辑上讲，D中flies没有限定，如果用those of others，those指代species， others只能指代other flies，而前面flies 没有被限定，泛指所有flies，何来other species？
而E中用that 限定了flies，所以可以说other species。

从语法角度来讲支持楼上看法！
D最大的问题是改变了句子的intended meaning；
原句的意思是Hydrocarbons assit flies; these flies happen to taste Hydrocarbons..
但是D的意思是Hydrocarbons assit flies to taste...和原句意思有出入
