In the minds of many people living in England,before Australia was Australia,it was the antipodes,the opposite pole to civilization, an obscure and unimaginable place that was considered the end of the world.

就记得老师讲的时候说，before Australia was Australia是在澳大利亚建国前的意思，只有A可以表示这个意思

不过这道题也可以用排除法来做

B：如果是before there was Australia，那时澳大利亚还不存在，所以不能用it指代Australia

C：it没有指代对象

D：what was。。。麻烦，直接去掉what was就可以表达同样的意思（GMAT经常考这种错误）

E：was what had been 。。。麻烦，同D项
