解释说not ... but ...中的but为连词，可是又举出一个这样的例子：The rain cost not prosperity but ruin.这里的but后加ruin，怎么可能是连词？

解释说C中的but可能是介词引起because they enhance reproduction or survival, but simply random by-products的歧义，而D中在but后面补出are就可以避免这样的歧义，因为这样but只能是连词，而不可能是介词。但是，D中的are not the products.....but are simply random by-products...这里not...but平行吗？一个are在前一个are在后？

看了很多老帖，有一个这样的说法：

not 位于助动词，系动词，或情态动词后，可以把not..but..看作是一个普通的否定副词not +并列连词but 

此时不是一个固定词组，没有强调平行对等，以是两个独立的单词

平行的，be动词放在not前面是一种习惯，are not...but...这个结构既可以把be动词看做在并列之内，也可以看做不在并列范围内。

这是个老问题了，我一直觉得prep里面对C的解释有点问题...but前面有逗号，不会引起修饰reproduction or survival的含义，而是引起跟favored because they enhance reproduction or survival一起修饰 products of natural selection的歧义（but做介词）。也就是说but simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments作为介词短语作状语修饰其最近的分句they enhance reproduction or survival去了。

事实上我们要表达的是but simply random by-products of other evolutionary developments与are not the products of natural selection并列（but做连词），而不是修饰关系。

两个黄色部分是否有矛盾？

其他的有点模糊

修饰最近的分句和修饰该分句的最后一个名词是不一样的...

umm..感觉这句话表达的意思跟我的那句话没有太大分歧。
