Space money exploring outer space, or for basic needs on Earth?

Some people think government should spend as much money as possible exploring outer space (for example, traveling to the moon and to other planets). Other people disagree and think government should spend this money for our basic needs on Earth. Which of these two opinions do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to support your answer.

Many people think that space research and exploration is a money consuming program, and they are more side with the government to invest money on the basic needs of human beings such as education, environment protection, or solve unemployment. However, I tend to agree that government to spend money on space exploration for we gain many merit from it.

Among the reasons of funding on space research and exploration is it can help solving many thorny problem we are going to face tomorrow. For example, overpopulation and the rapidly running out of recourses could become a worldwide threat, and before we render our own planet uninhabitable we should found another place to colonize there, so why should mankind be restricted to this one planet? Man will be able to boldly venture out into the universe and colonizing in other worlds. In this position, it would be foolish to ignore the vast potential of our own solar system mining recourses on asteroids or other planets, or emigrate to other planets. Nevertheless, if we fail to continue to develop the ability to take advantage of these possibilities, we may in future find it is too late.

Equally important is through exploring the space greatly directly spurs the development of science in application and thus improved our living conditions. Life abounds with such examples, for example, weather satellites save lives by giving advance warning of adverse conditions, and research of climate change would be impossible without the data collected by satellites. Another example is the cell-phone we use every day. Satellites orbiting the Earth allow us to communicate instantaneously with people on different continents, in addition, the satellites-relayed TV broadcasting enable us to obtain more information around the world and enlarged our knowledge. Therefore, no one can deny the value of invest money on space research for it not only solve the potential risk and threat we face in the future but also benefits us today from the scientific products.

Matching the future and current benefits we gain from space exploration another reason for space exploration deserve government subsidy is it spurs the relevant subjects’ prosperity, such as biology, physics and astronomy and so on. For instance, some plant seeds have been carried into the outer space and some new varieties of plants have been bred; in addition, a probe will be send to the Saturn’s moon and acquire information on that moon, this knowledge will be interpreted in the light of experimental results and be recorded in the data base, which helps the explanation of the theories of the planetary formation, etc..

I understand the psychology of the opponent who claims that government should give priority to the basic needs such as education, medical research, environment protection or unemployment. Space research and exploration is an arduous and money-consuming enterprise, nonetheless, from what has been discussed above, we could safely say that it is necessary for the government to subside money on the program.
