这个里面的had feared 可不可以用feared呢？

据Ron大神说，过去完成时使用有条件之一是： for past actions that were ongoing until, or relevant to, a later past TIME MARKER.

然后这里fear是一直持续到earlier in the year，而earlier in the year又在soft landing之前，因此fear的动作是延续到一个“过去的时间点”上，所以用的过去完成时~

It is clear by the "earlier in the year" that the fears occurred earlier than the analysts’ opinion. It is not the "followed by a gradual increase in business activity" clause that serves as the past tense, as you could get rid of that clause and the sentence would still be correct.
【past是in the year，分析師fear是發生在earlier in the year的，所以可以用past perfect!! 而且我覺得past of past的描述對past還是有影響的，分析師在earlier in the year之前的預測，對於in the year時的狀態有影響。如果僅僅用simple past的話，就僅僅是對事實的敘述，沒有其他深層次的意思】;)

句子的结构： the gains(主语)…reflect（谓语）growing confidence(宾语)that the economy(从句主语) will avoid(从句谓语) the recession(从句宾语) { that …in the year修饰recession的定语从句} and(并列词) instead (will)come(从句谓语2)…修饰confidence的定语从句】
我的:理解句义远胜于根据规则生搬硬套公式，“earlier in the year”修饰的是“recession”说明它的发生远在过去的过去“confidence that”>"confidence in"，还有“instead”&“rather”的区别，前者表示"replace",后者表示“而不是”：I want a dog rather a cat.
