Some schools have a very strict policy on deadline, others may be more flexible.

LZ should contact adcoms to find out whether your app is viewed as R2 app or R3 app.

probably won't do any good.Duke (as well as many other top schools) hires outside institution for the filing process, and your application won't show up in the database unless u'v made it to the deadline.I bet the email you'll receive will be one like this: "we appreciate blah blah blah.....however..blah blah blah......therefore, you are still welcome to apply for the next round." Good luck.

maybe, maybe not. i personally know one similar case successfully considered into 2nd round by Wharton.
