申请marketing phd program中的quantitative方向，不知道有多大的chance，背景如下：

本科: PKU, 当时全省第四名，accounting, No. 2 in the department;

硕士: PKU CCER, Economics, No. 5;

Exchange experience: Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, one semester.

Research experience:

Two research projects with a professor at NYU and a professor at Dartmouth; one project with a professor at UCLA.

A poster presented at 2007 ACR conference at Memphis (but it is a consumer behavior conference

Research Assistant of another professor at NYU and a professor at U Toronto.

Reference: one from an associate professor at NYU (I believe it is a really strong recommendation letter since he knows me very well), my advisor at PKU, and a professor used to be a faculty in the States.

Standard tests: GMAT 720 (shame on me!); IBT 110 (speaking 27).

Others: visited NYU recently and talked to three professors there.

申请了美国的10多所学校，最想去的就是nyu。大家能帮忙看看希望有多大呢？因为自己的背景不是统计，所以有点悬。

不知道大家的情况如何？材料都寄出了，不知道现在还需要努力什么，可以增加自己被录取的chance?

I feel you should have big chance at NYU. But marketing department at nyu is really big and the committee need to balance the preference of profs, so if your recommender got the student he recommended last year, the weight of his recommendation letter will be smaller. 通俗一点说，还能全是你家菜园子了，怎么也得让别的老师招个人家喜欢的学生吧。But I am sure you will at least get the interview.

But as far as I know, the nyu professor recommending me did not recommend any student in the last year. I am the first one he has recommended.

That will be perfect. I thought your recommender is yuxin chen.

I think you deserve a more decent place like berkeley based on your econ background, although Tulin left berkeley, berkeley's placement is still very good, especially for chinese student.

I knew yuxin chen. But I don't ask for his reference. The professor recommending me is an American.

I did not apply to berkerly actually. I love tulin's research and she is in NYU! I saw her when I was in stern but did not talk to her.

Stern's phd students also have very good placement and it is new york anyway. But it is a really competitive program. So, I am still not sure what will happen.

If you really want to be in quantative marketing, you'd better choose a university with a strong statistics and economics departments too. It's critical to your long-term career. Berkely is certianly one of the better choices. Wharton is arguably the best choice. You may also want to consider Stanford, Chicago, Columbia, Duke and some lesser schools like UT-Austin, Wash U in St. Louis, Ohio State and Maryland. Going to a PhD program ranked lower than Maryland and Ohio State is not a great career choice.

Stern used to have a stats department. Now they only have Cliff whose expertise is not even close to marketing. Their econ is traditionally Austrin (Schumpeter and von Mises). I heard their econ group has got a few good econometricians lately.

Let me tell you this: Tulin Erdem is a good marketing researcher. But her quant skills are nowhere close those great econometricians (like Heckman, Amemiya) and statisticians (like Fan Jianqin, Efron). You do want to have these people around to hone your quant skills lest get laughed at later.

楼上的真搞笑，heckman是econ 的nobel，jianqing fan是annals of statistics的editor和IMS的主席，你拿marketing的人和他们比technical比的了吗？别说marketing了，就是商学院其他专业，或者econ和stat的人，能和他们比的也没几个阿。
