这道题我对答案没有疑惑，只是对OG的解释：Th e phrase following diabetes is set

from the sentence; it is not a part of the subject.不太能理解。忘牛牛们帮助一下。另外，在SURPASSED前面加上and可以吗？

呵呵，就是说你可以把‘together with its serious complications’ 拿掉来考虑主谓一致啊。

这就是对“插入语”的英文解释~~
The phrase following diabetes is set
off by a pair of commas, indicating that it is

什么是插入语？提供描述性信息，非主语的一部分，逗号间的内容可以去掉不用考虑！
因为它是插入语，所以不能在surpass前加and！and会是多余的！
