number如果接名词的话是否应该用单数，变成a vast number of human beings吧？？

numbers为什么加复数呢？？

1、只是一个分词短语修饰，可以补全为一个定语从句，但是不够简洁，而且后面还有一个定语从句在修饰同一个名词，会使得句子变得非常复杂。

2、理解了1之后，2就好理解了,因为中心词就是microbe。

3、这样的词还有相同的，像a lot of和lots of、a quantity of和quantities of等。

同意楼上的.seen on earth只是一个分词短语修饰microbe,表被动.

例如: a computer made in China,道理是一样的

分词短语是简洁于定于从句的.

至于后面那个that might...为啥不修饰earth...既然seen on earth 都是修饰成分了,that从句修饰中心词microbe啊.没有歧义的时候,that跳修饰一下是可以的
