4 years of working experience is a must in many of the top B schools.  Say 2011 would be a good idea... As long as you can get your Gmat above 700+ and have a really kick azz essay

1. Yes, your prior experience will count.

2. Six years by the time they start school, so five by the time they apply.  Keep in mind it's an average number so some do apply after a year or two and some wait a bit longer.

3. Take the GMAT, try to gain leadership experience (your work title doesn't matter as much as your actual responsibility, contribution, and level of influence) and start thinking about the essays.  You will know when you are ready.

4. Start researching various schools and attend information sessions.  It's most important to find the school that fit you best, not the one with the highest ranking.

5. Volunteer, if you can, so you can take on extra responsibilities and gain broad experience.

Good luck!

mba is for young "stars"

many people who want to switch jobs apply to business schools. for these people, the younger the better

and for those people just wnat to stay in their industry, what's the point to quit for two--year study? of course there are people who need this degree to progress in their industry, banking, consulting, etc, but for them, the average work-experience prio-mba is 3. a side-note, a couple of days ago, a friend at a very good PE firm told me that a former colleague who is now in a top 3 programs is trying hard to come back. if he does not quit the job, he would not have this problem

if my brother or sister wants to apply to bschool, i will tell them the earlier, the better. dont argue with me. i dont buy the theory the more experience you have, the more you will get from the study. hehe.

problem with what your saying is that most top school don't accept anyone with less than 3 or 4 years of working experience.  So the earlist for most people is after 25.

I don't believe that's a hard requirement.  It's up to the individual applicant's experience, accomplishments, and demonstrated potential.
