一个句子的结构问题

是一道逻辑题的一个选项，看这个句子结构时不太明白。
Whether among those scientists who do highly creative work beyond age forty a large proportion entered their field at a considerably later age than is common.
简化后是whether ... a large proportion entered their field at a considerably later age than is common.
than is common这部分只有跟later age比较了，但意思没看懂，谁能把than后的省略部分补一下吗？
语法中很多是考比较结构，所以看到类似结构还是想弄明白些。多谢大家。

或 than is common (age)都可以
