问一道颇具争议的题

根据朗文字典，attempt to do sth 和attempt at doiing sth 都是正确的结构。在本题中虽然begun出现在两个名词后面有修饰歧义的嫌疑，但无奈相对较好的已经是A和D，奇怪的是答案是A，请问D又错在那里了呢？

查了以前的讨论贴，都没有结论。
