请教pp语法两道，请指教：

1 . Photographer Edward Steichen constantly experimented new techniques and materials in his quest to have photography accepted as a creative art.
正确答案为A, 是时态错误吗？
2. Light from the sun can penetrate only a few hundred meters below surface of the ocean.
正确答案为C，为什么，一定要加定冠词THE吗？

1. experiments with , 经常性发生的动作用一般进行时就好了
2。 below the surface, 单数可数名词前面一定要有限定词
