as part of their therpy 就是说作为治疗的一部分，这里是说young polio victims learning to live with their disabilities were helped to practice falling －－as part of their theropy

both the sentence, " young polio..." and "so that..." took place in 50's, so "During the 50s" should be at the beginning part of the sentence (or, it could also be put in the ending part, which is not underlined here)
