<rrprabhu> Bye all.

<cris> great thanks judson, where would be the best placel to ask questions about that topic specifically

<tomlin> Hi Divya, the corporate advisory board is more focued on helping set the long-term direction for the program and less involved in day-to-day student interactions.

<Sagar> Thanks Judson, Ben and all the others for the opportunity to learn more about GSCM! Bye!

Hatem has signed off.:Web Browser left the chat web page

<Judson_KFBS2007> Cris, that topic is being looked at by the Center for Sustainable Enterprise and several SE students are interested in that topic.

<SAM> ok thanks David I will check the website

<SAM> ok thanks David I will check the website

> thanks everyone for your time...Bye..

<david_KFBS2007> Sam, i think that this is a question for mba_info@unc.edu

<SAM> Thank you all for your help

<FengJi> Thanks Dave!

<krish> thanks praveen

<FengJi> Thanks Tomlin!

<Sagar> Thanks for the information, Judson!

<ravin_KFBS2007> Krish, I exactly don't know that. You can check it mba_info@unc.edu

<SAM> What s the first step to be considered at UNC

<Hatem> ok thank u all

<Divya> Does practicums help companies from South east asia or other countries outside the US? Do students get opportunity to choose the company they like to work with? Does the career services department help in this?

<Rajesh> My thanks to all the participants...Thanks for the time and patience

<Judson_KFBS2007> Sagar, I don't know about previous classes but no one from my class interned there.  There are several students who interned with the Center for Sustainable Enterprise as consultants through the Kenan Institute.

<Tyler> Thank you for the chat!

<robr528> Thanks Ben

<ravin_KFBS2007> Rajesh, Good to know that you benefited from it

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, Sam, I am happy to do so. Here is my address. Kane_Nakamura@unc.edu Please feel free to contact me personally.

<Ben_KFBS2007> Robr528, the transcript of the chat will be up by this time next week.

<SAM> Thanks Pravin

<krish> thanks praveen, a question outside GSCM.....will all students be notified on march 12th about their application status?

<david_KFBS2007> Hatem, the pre-MBA course is for admitted MBA students

<ravin_KFBS2007> Sam, You are always welcome

<Rajesh> It has been great attending the session. The questions and answers were quite helpful and interesting to me

<robr528> When will this chat be posted on the KFBS website?

<Sagar> Judson, I was referring to the Research Triangle Institute International. Has anyone with a GSCM focus interned at RTI?

<tomlin> Hi Divya, sorry I was answering other questions. Which question did you have?

<Hatem> ok without TOEFL i cant to apply ? no way to take preMBA at your university?

<tomlin> Hi Divay,

<ravin_KFBS2007> Krish, Not at all. Even internationals are free to take it

<tomlin> Hi Feng, if you already have a deep specialization in GSCM from education and experience then an MBA is not likely to refine your functional skills. It will, however, give you a broad business perspective.

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, Hiroko, I notice from your name that you are Japanese. Please feel to ask me any question, in Japanese if you want to.

<SAM> I really wanted to visit UNC

<melissa> thank you so much for your great answers!!

<SAM> Kane do you want to exchage infos

<Goy> Thanks everyone for your time Bye

<krish> Hi, is recruitment for GSCM restricted to within the US?

<Divya> Hi Tomlin. Can you please answer my question ?

<tomlin> Hi chinese - yes I am a faculty membeer.

<robr528> Hello all.  Sorry to join late.  When will this chat be posted on KFBS website?

<FengJi> Hi Tomlin,it's a on-job traing. Yes I got a certificate for SCM from NC State

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, everyone, I have to tell you we have to close the chat in 8mins. So, please make sure you ask questions you want to.Hi, everyone, I have to tell you we have to close the chat in 8mins. So, please make sure you ask questions you want to.

<chinese> thanks

<Ben_KFBS2007> http://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/Programs/MBA/concentration/SupplyChain/index.cfm

<Ben_KFBS2007> Chinese:  here is a link to some information regarding the supply chain concentration here at KFBS:

<Rajesh> Oh that way!

<Judson_KFBS2007> Rajesh, there is a GSCM concentration and a Consulting concentration offered.

<david_KFBS2007> Hatem, yes TOEFL is required. I think that the minimum score is about 250

<tomlin> Hi FengJi, did you do an undergrad, post-grad, certificate in NC State?

<SAM> Kane, what do you thik the No1 component beside the work experience?

<chinese> are u a faculty here ?

<chinese> tomlin

<Hatem> is that nessesary to apply ?

<tomlin> Cris, from a faculty perspective I find the students here to be very collaborative and willing to help each other. I hear faculty at other universities commenting that their students are not very collaborative. However, that is what I have heard - I don't have specific evidence to that effect.

<chinese> i want to know the information about supply chain program in this university

<Hatem> good but i did not have TOEFL examination .

<FengJi> NC State University provided some inventory managment knowledges,SCM related concepts, and some projects by cross function team. However,I want to know how our MP&L, Purchasing directors are resolving problems, they obviously could looking more further than our team members.

<Rajesh> Melissa, I dont understand your earlier question of SCM not being Consulting...could you clarify

<SAM> Kane, Yes it is very unique, well on the top of this I am good in math, acct and I speak 4 languages

<cris> to clarify my question.  What is it about the GSCM program that is unique?

<Divya> Hi Tomlin. A question to you. Does practicum help companies from South-east asia or other countries outside of the US ? Do students get opportunity to choose the company they like to work with? Does the career services department help in this?

<chinese> and i m interested in supply chain

Indra has entered UNC_Kenan_Flagler_Business_School_Global_Supply_Chain_Management__Concentrati.

<Judson_KFBS2007> other industries such as Investment Banking or Consulting that hire large numbers of MBAs each year.  There is no lack of support for career search and many students, such as Ben and myself, go on to work for consulting firms in SC roles.

<chinese> and i m a MBA student

<david_KFBS2007> Hatem, all of the information is in the admitted student folders

<cris> Admissions Staff, Faculty, or students, What do you find different about UNC's program that you do not find at other B-schools?

<chinese> hi , i m a chinese in the states right now

<Anand> Anand> Thanks Toml..David..Jerel..

<SAM> Thank Kane

<samtnus> great help, Ben

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, Sam, Sounds like you have unique background. We like people with diversity and uniquenes. So, be confident of what you have done.

<tomlin> Hi Divya, the corporate advisory board helps provide input into the design of the concentration to ensure that students are exposed to the important/relevant experiences/concepts. At times there is some interaction with students but there is also a wide alumni network that is very willing to interact with current students.

<Hatem> ok what i need to apply to ASW?

<Ben_KFBS2007> Samtus, I think you are asking whether finance concentrators all have finance backgrounds. . . The short answer is no.  Students do not necessarily have to have backgrounds aligned with their studies at KFBS.  It offers a great opportunity to those who would like to career change and brings new perspectives into the classroom.  A definite bonus!

<chinese> hi

<Judson_KFBS2007> Melissa, the GSCM concentration is smaller when compared to Investment Banking or Marketing but it also serves a different market.  In the corporate world, there is less turnover for these type positions than ...

<Sagar> Judson, I was referring to the Research Triangle Institute International

<david_KFBS2007> anand, we do look at the service sectore for the supply chain. I worked in services for the summer and the classes were very useful preparation.

<melissa> It sounds like this is one of the smaller concentrations. Do current students feel like this affects the amount of resources or help available, as compared to larger ones like consulting?

<Anand> Anand> Jerel..Thanks for responding..what is the role of GSCM in service sector???

<SAM> Will this experience help?

<Divya> Does the corporate advisory board interact with the students? How often do they get to meet the board ?

<tomlin> Hi Anand, I'll respond for Jerel as he is responding to another question. Sercive companies are becoming incerasingly focused on designing/managing effective and efficient processes and service experiences. These challenges tyically best addressed by GSCM type analyses/solutions.

<SAM> Kane, Well since I immigrated 10yrs ago to the US I had to work in the hospitality business to support myself

<david_KFBS2007> Hatem, we have a prpearation course for the MBA, either 2 months or one moth proior to starting. It is called ASW (Analytical Skills Workshop)

<Judson_KFBS2007> Sagar, what is the RTI that you are referring to?

<Divya> Thanks BEn

<Divya> That is a good stat.

Teezar has signed off.:Ping timeout

<samtnus> Ben, any student who takes finance concentration does not have any BA background?

<Anand> Anand> Jerel..Thanks for responding..what is the role of GSCM in service sector???

<Sagar> Thanks, Judson. But is it true that RTI value this combination?

<cris> What do you think is the most significnat dieffernce between UNC's program and those of other B-Schools?

<Ben_KFBS2007> Divya, I would say there are a number of people who choose to stay in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area for their internships/full time.  I'm not sure the percentage (maybe 10-20%?) that stay in the area, but I believe that nearly everyone who seeks an internship is able to find one.

<Hatem> does your university ofer preMBA?

<Jerel_KFBS2008> Hello Anand, please see message above. Manufacturing is important as it helps the learning curve, but not necessary. Service supply is also important

<Divya> Sorry I mean my previous two questions.

<SAM> Kool I will check the website later

> David, thank you...does KFBS MBA program of GSCM require students to have strong mathmatical background..? I mean, if it requires to set up lot of mathmatical models during study..?

<ravin_KFBS2007> Goy, nice to know that

<Rajesh> Thanks David.

<Divya> Can anyone answer my question my previous two questions ?

<Tyler> Thanks David.

<Rajesh> It looks to be a very interesting domain integrating a wide range of fields...is very good for someone who wants to consolidate his/her experience

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, Sam, Other components will be your work experience and soft and hard skills. Hope you will find more at  http://www.kenan-flagler.unc.edu/Programs/MBA/Apply/criteria.cfm

<Anand> Anand> Jrel..Thanks for responding..what is the role of GSCM in service sector???

<david_KFBS2007> Tyler, about 30% of the class is internaitonal.

<SAM> Kane, what are the other component beside the GNAT score?

<Tyler> It seems as if there are several international students in this chat.  Does KF attract a lot of students from abroad?  About what percent of students at KF come from other countires?

<Judson_KFBS2007> Sagar, it is a good combination and many of my classmates take both Sustainable Enterprise & GSCM classes but they have chosen not to pursue dual concentrations.

<Goy> Oh sorry, since Pravin is normal name here?

<samtnus> got it, thanks Ben

<david_KFBS2007> Fengji, i also worked in purchasing before KFBS. I think that you will learn alot about the total supply chain, how in inter-realtes and its importance in other industires.

Aman has entered UNC_Kenan_Flagler_Business_School_Global_Supply_Chain_Management__Concentrati.

<Ben_KFBS2007> Samtnus, our colleagues that are entering the investment banking industry are no doubt Finance concentrators.

<tomlin> Hi Feng, you may have answered this already and if so I apologize. What NC State training do you have?

<ravin_KFBS2007> Goy, No I am not. I am from India.

<Sagar> Hmm..but Judson, I heard that GSCM + SE could be a great combination for people interested in Bottom of the pyramid products/services and companies like the RTI value this combination very much??

<Anand> Anand> anyone respond.. isnt manufacturing experience better than ne other for GSCM as it exposes u to logistics, inventory management, purshase

<Divya> I'm not sure whether this question was asked before. What percentage of the students get internships in the companies at RTP? IS being in the proximity of RTP/coming from KFBS helpful with respect to obtaining internships ?

<Goy> Thanks Pravin . By the way, are you Thai?

<david_KFBS2007> Rajesh, i think that if you are interested in supply chain then your prior xpereince is great

<Jerel_KFBS2008> It makes the learning curve easier, but it is not necessary. Many companies are also interested in service supply issues

<SAM> So what are the other components?

<samtnus> What concentration KF students usually take before entering the investment banking industry?

<Hatem> hi iam hatem from jordan

<Judson_KFBS2007> career that will focus on making food producing operations sustainable and safe.

<FengJi> Dave, what I can expect to learn from GSCM course, my purchasing experience in automotive and SCM training by NC State University really teach me much. I do want to know more core value from UNC GSCM, would you share some here? Thanks!

<cris> What tools do you encourage students to use as the pace of change increases.  International sensitivity? how to use consultants? how to work with governments? thank you

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, Sam, If your time allows, please pay a visit to UNC. I am more than happy to spend time with you.

<rrprabhu> As Jerel pointed out SCM is a very wide field and covers vast areas

<Alvaro> How many students from latin AMerica take this specialization?

<Rajesh> How much of prior engineering, finance or business experience would be appropriate for students taking this module?

<tomlin> Hi Cris: certainly outsourcing is more prevalent, lifecycles are becoming shorter. However the big thing is that the pace of change is increasing. Therefore, as faculty, we try to equip you with the skills necessary to adapt to a changing landscape.

<Sagar> Thanks Ben. Is there anyone at KFBS who have combined the GSCM concentration with the Sustainable Enterprise concentration?

<Lalith> Thanks, Tomlin.

<SAM> OH, Japan great

<Jerel_KFBS2008> Hello Anand, any experience is generally helpful for GSCM, because it involves components of many fields

<SAM> Well I am curently graduated from NCSU and I am considering UNC

<Anand> > Anand>...please respond anyone....what kind of previous work experience is helpful for GSCM?

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, Sam. Yes, I am first MBA student from Japan.

<Goy> Can anyone recommend the must - study courses in GSCM?

chad has signed off.:Web Browser closed

<Ben_KFBS2007> Sagar,  Global Supply Chain Management is very closely tied to our General Management concentration.  Many of the class credits count in both concentrations, and many companies that recruit at KFBS value both greatly.

<SAM> Are you a student at UNC

<Judson_KFBS2007> Hi nanderson, there is not any specific training on six sigma or other 3rd party accreditations.  These topics are covered in a very high level during the core Operations class but not beyond that.

> Thanks David..BTW..does anybody know the supply chain system in Best Buy..or was someone worked over there post KFBS MBA...?

<SAM> HI Kane

<SAM> Hello David, How do you like UNC program?

<david_KFBS2007> Goy, it was not a practicum, but a study abroad. You can chose universities that have a supply chain concenetration though

<Anand> Anand>what kind of previous work experience is helpful for GSCM?

<tomlin> Hi Lailith, As faculty we stay engaged with industry and ensure that we discuss cutting-edge practices into the classroom as appropriate. Equally important, we try tp provide you with a deep understanding and problem solving skills so they can adapt as new processes/technologies are introduced throughout their career.

<Divya> Thanks Pravin. Does the corporate advisory board directly interact and help out the students ?

<Kane_KFBS2008> To all participants. If we are missing to respond your questions, please feel free to remind us. Thank you.

<rrprabhu> Thanks Judson . So we will be dealing with logistics, JIT

<Goy> Hi David, about your experience in Costa Rica, is it one of the GSCM practicum?

<ravin_KFBS2007> Divya, we get an opportunity to participate in a lot of case comps. It all depends on your interest and time commitment

<Sagar> Hello David and other current students! The GSCM concentration has electives for operations too, right?

<Anand> > <Anand>hi Jerel ..what kind of previous work experience is helpful for GSCM?

<david_KFBS2007> Fengji, i am still at UNC

<Judson_KFBS2007> particular class that focuses on CRM but it goes beyond how to capture the information and focuses more on what the data means.  The majority of the GSCM curriculum is beneficial for all students due to the project nature of SC.

<Tyler> Thank you David.

<Kane_KFBS2008> Tyler, Any time.

<david_KFBS2007> Bellamy, yes this counts!

<Goy> Thanks Tomelin ;D

> Hi everyone, this is Bellamy from China, I am wondering, does 3 years experience as a supply chain specialist count on GSCM experience..?;o)

<tomlin> Hi Goy, there are a variety of international-related electives (some GSCM focused others focused on other functions.) There are also global immersion electives in which students go to a particular country/region for about two weeks to learn more about the country/regions.

<Kane_KFBS2008> Tyler, I have a classmate with 20yr work experience as well as one with a few year work experience. The right timing may vary person by person. However, if you believe MBA is the necessary step to achieve your career. Don't give up no matter how long it takes.

<SAM> My name is Sam recently graduate from NCSU and I will like some info about How to g=be one of the student at UNC business school?

<Divya> Are there opportunites to work with other top b-schools or their students apart from the student exchange program?

<rrprabhu> Hi Jerel , David

<Lalith> Good afternoon, Tomlin and other faculty members! I would like to know how the faculty ensures that a ^`201cCurrent^`201d global picture is presented to the students, given that things are dynamically changing in most of the countries

<nanderson> Does the GSCM incorporate any six-sigma-esque training or initiative?

<Jerel_KFBS2008> Hello Anand, the average work experience for KF students is 5 years

<Tyler> What sort of study abroad opportunities does the GSCM program provide?

<david_KFBS2007> FengJi, I also worked in Automotive before joining KFBS. We have several cases on the automobile industry, though the courses are much broader than just one industry.

<Anand> <Anand>what is average work ex. of students in GSCM at Kenan?

<Ben_KFBS2007> As with any internship, your first year at KFBS truly comes into play.  The core courses in finance, statistics, economics, accounting, and in particular supply chain management were very important.

<tomlin> Hi Melissa, not necessarily. Some students have prior GSCM  experience. Others do not have prior GSCM experience.

<Kane_KFBS2008> Hi, Tyler. Let me respond to your question.

<Divya> Oh.. thanks Judson

<david_KFBS2007> 360 evaluations!

<david_KFBS2007> Rajesh, KFBS is very big on feedback and we usually give feedbcak after every project and class. Also, we all complete 30 degree evaluations which really help our learnings.

<samtnus> Ben- What skills are required during your Deloitte intern?

<Judson_KFBS2007> the mentor relationships are established based on career focus.  The role of the mentor is just to help facilitate the transition back to school and help provide general insight into different areas.

<Divya> Thanks Tomlin and Judson

<tomlin> Hi Goy, I am not sure I completely understand your question. Do you want to know whether there are particular specializations withing the GSCM concentration?

<melissa> Do students usually enter this concentration with a related work background?

<Lalith> Thanks, David. :-) A very ideal situation.

Judson_KFBS2007> Divya, there is a peer mentoring program in place.  2nd year students volunteer to be peer mentors for 1st year students.  The progam is not mandatory and ...

<Rajesh> Also, how do you get to share your learnings after the projects? Any peer study or evaluation or exchange of notes after these programs...I'm curious to know if they become a part of case studies...

<Tyler> Thank you.  I am 25 and am about to complete my 3rd year of work experience.  I would like to get an MBA at some point and am trying to figure out when might be the best time for me to apply.

<Alvaro> I am 30 years old and work in a supply chain management in Latin AMerica

<Judson_KFBS2007> Tyler, I am 28 with 5 years experience.

<Divya> No. I guess the second year students mentor the first year students and about 3 first year students are assigned to each second year student.

<david_KFBS2007> I am 29, with 7 years of experience

<Ben_KFBS2007> Tyler, I am 27 and have four years of work experience prior to KFBS.

<tomlin> Hi Divya, when you say the mentoring program. Do you mean the practicums I referred to earlier?

<Alvaro> 30 years

<david_KFBS2007> Lalith, i think that KFBS prepared us exceptionally well for the internship. That is the view or practically every student at KFBS.

<Ben_KFBS2007> Sure Anand.  Deloitte Consulting has a very strong Supply Chain practice and they actively recruit out of KFBS.  My function this summer was related to the aerospace industry and how to build a strategy that takes into account a rapidly changing industry in terms of SC.

<Goy> Well, since there is one of a few university having GSCM, what is the key concentration of GSCM?

<Tyler> To the current students in the chat:  How old are you now?

<Anand> > <Anand> hi Ben..could you please elaborate on profile at deloitte in supply chain?

cris has entered UNC_Kenan_Flagler_Business_School_Global_Supply_Chain_Management__Concentrati.

<tomlin> One thing we often find is that people planning on a marketing career find out during their internship that GSCM is very relevant to their marketing role and, therefore, they choose to jointly concentrate in marketing and GSCM.

<Divya> Can anyone answer my question ?

<Lalith> Greetings! This is to the students who interned recently ^`2013 Did you face any challenges, during internship, for which you felt that KFBS didn^`2019t prepare you?

<Rajesh> Thanks Tomlin & Pravin

<Goy> Hi, this is Goy from Thailand

<samtnus> thanks. David

<ravin_KFBS2007> Rajesh, The project was about inventory evaluation and throughput improvement, to give you an idea of what students participate in

<Anand> <Anand> hi Ben..could you please elaborate on profile at deloitte in supply chain?

<tomlin> Alvaro, there are certain universities that specialize in logistics whereas we aim to provide a more-rounded experience that focuses on strategic/executive level GSCM issues. For long-term career progression, I would say we are very competitive.

<Ben_KFBS2007> Alvaro, there are roughly 30 students concentrating in Global Supply Chain Management here at KFBS.  However, many more choose to take classes in this function.

<Pravin_KFBS2007> Rajesh, last year I did a practicum project at agoodyear tire and Rubber factory

<david_KFBS2007> Of course, i was working in the services side of Dell. A major aspect of my role was managing a Request For Proposal (RFP) initiative

<tomlin> Hi Rajesh, there are opportunities through practicums to do real industry projects.

<samtnus> David-could you put it more specific about your intern in Dell? thanks.

<Judson_KFBS2007> Research
            Triangle

<Alvaro> How many students take this sprecialization?

<Divya> For the mentoring program, are groups assigned as done for 'study group program' or are the students free to select the mentors we would like to have ?

<Ben_KFBS2007> Melissa, I interned at Deloitte Consulting this past summer in a Global Supply Chain role.

<Anand> <Anand> Hi Judson thans for replying, what is RTP

<Judson_KFBS2007> such as Amazon.com, Eaton, Johnson & Johnson, & John Deere as well as consulting firms such as Deloitte & McKinsey.

<david_KFBS2007> I interned at Dell in Austin

<Alvaro> How competitive is the supply chain specialization with other colleges?

<Ben_KFBS2007> In the past few months companies such as Dell, Johnson & Johnson, Eaton, Amazon, IBM, Lenovo, Home Depot, Lowes, Bank of America, etc.

<Anand> I have a question. At Kenan Flagler, with what kind of industries does the global supply chain management club have tie-ups?

<david_KFBS2007> samtnus, it is very rare that students go into purchasing after graduation, but it does happen. J&J have recruited for strategic procurement in the past.

<Divya> Thanks Tomlin. I guess this happens when the academic year is in progress. Am i right ?

<Ty> Ben, can you be more specific, what are the primary companies or consulting firms that recruit GSCM students.

<BrianE> I'm sorry I have to leave early, I have a 1:00 meeting. But thank you for taking the time to talk to us!

<Ben_KFBS2007> Melissa & BrianE, in relation to Global Supply Chain Management, students are pursuing all types of jobs (both summer internships and full-time).  At KFBS, many of the top global SC companies recruit right here on campus, as well as a number of consulting firms with SC businesses.

<tomlin> Divya, I will answer this as I am a faculty member. The faculty here all value interactions with coompanies. With regard to student involvement we typically do this via various types of practicum opportunities during the 1st and 2nd years.

<samtnus> Do many graduates with GSCM specialty pursue the purchasing roles?

<david_KFBS2007> Teezar, all the chat transcripts are posted on our Admissions Events website.  Here is the link:

<Divya> What percentage of the faculty members do consulting for companies? Are students invited to assist them in their consulting?

<tomlin> Our graduates go to work in a variety of fields. Some go into consulting. Some go into supply chain related jobs for corporate companies.

<BrianE> How have you found the search for internships with a Supply Chain focus?

<melissa> What kinds of jobs/internships are current students pursuing? And were you able to find them through on-campus recruiting or was it more through your own searches?

<Teezar> sorry, my question is not relevant, but i missed the previous chat sessions. Can I get a record of previous chat sessions?

<Jerel_KFBS2008> Hello, feel free to fire away with your questions

<rob> Tomlin, then for whom would someone work if it involves multiple companies?  A consulting firm?  The product producer?

<Judson_KFBS2007> Hi Carlos, the school itself does not offer any certification testing for 3rd party accreditations.  There are other resources in the RTP area that may offer that type of testing.

<tomlin> Hi Rob: This is hard to give a short answer to but I will do my best. Basically, the supply chain management aspect refers to all the activities, processes associated with developing new products, services, manufaturing said products or services and delivering them to customers. This involves multiple companies. The global aspect means we also focus on the international aspect of supply ch
