-The Letter ... his mom is saying almost the same as my mom said to me..." A WAR-movie, "A letter from Iwo Jima"
Considering a movie to go during this holiday Valentines? Don't never put this one on list; It is about War and the cruelest battle ever fought on a tiny ‘Jima’, island in Japanese, called Iwo in Pacific ocean between Japan and American.
'A letter from Iwo Jima' Oscar nominee, ‘the best foreign language’, or maybe more, is definitely a 'cool' and 'cruel' war-movie only for those seeking something historical and serious; maybe only alluring to boys and man as many would say.
Released almost at same time, together, its brother movie directed by same person, same philosophy was named: "A flag of our father’s" depicting same topics but from American side, picturing American troops attacking the very island. This one as symbolized in a code of, this time not a 'Flag' but a ‘Letter’ among hundreds buried underground in the tunnel dug by the soldiers fight their lives to death in defending this tiny island. It is a 100%must-go, as I enjoy the every minutes of it.
Clint Eastwood brought us landed on the island where some after-war Japanese Peace-workers activists, you may see printed on their cap in the movie, found the letters kept well and that paged the feelings and thoughts where the drama based on ....same as in the brother movie a 'Flag' from a famous ‘photo’ taken during the war.
This movie opened a window to the history book of World War Two, when Japan and America fought on the sea; reminded us another same topic movie 'Pearl harbor'; Movies of this type interest me or alike, movie lovers not only because it touches historical theme and famous battles in its brutality and heavy casualties recorded in human history so shocking. So it is significant challenging for directors to mirror this page of the world history with strong visual impact.
In a WAR-movie, naturedly people see things military; Yet, one thing very interesting both for viewers and makers is how to picture the war without too much 'bloody' scene, but at same time brought to viewers the battle almost ‘real’, no matter how scary it might be? When letters unearthed, ( came to light?) and again read byin a very touching way really put every of us in thinking of the meaning of WAR if any kinds?
We were encountered by (with?)the camera, so closely as we may feel, with the Japanese Army; their daily military jobs, their drills, conversations, and everything we may not vision in the book of history; their feelings and fears, they kill, they were killed, or they kill themselves with sword and grenades; real, true and vivid.
Undoubtedly, one thing certain and same with its ‘brother’ movie, is the fact that American won the battle, the island was occupied by the army with the 'Flag' of Stars and Stripes; however, if we go little beyond the story, as Oscar' has introduced the 'general' stared by a famous actor (who co-starred in ‘Last Samurai’ with Tom,) led his men fought not 6 days as predicted but 39 days in defending the island of only 20 Km/Sq; had numerous American lives taken on the beach, in rocky mountains; left the room for us to think how the battles would be if the main island was attacked. But hard to imagine the how deadly adn fatal any future war is going to be!
By a wild guess, I think the secret of the movie in its artistic excellence and of the appreciation part of it, for both the film-maker and viewers, lies ( rest on ) in an neutralized attitude, the humanity of peace-seeking-mind only belongs to the whole mankind; of the nature or value of this world; the feeling that shared by enemy soldier when shaking hands in his last breath in the trench。
If we now ask ourselves what symbolized 'A letter from Iwo Jima" tried to tell us? The message, Not so difficult with Clint Eastwood's document (-ation?) in his picture to all, as the dying solider said in his last moment' “they are evils, they say, those Americans ... BUT, the Letter ... his mom is saying almost same as my mom said to me..."
