In this lecture, the professor made an example to support that history is a selection of events based on the interpretation of the historian which is stated in the reading passage.
The example the professor uses to support the reading is that two biography books of a famous presenter tells definitely different but true things. The first biography focus on the presenter's early life which his father's business problem influent his family situation, several minute things in his school life such as he broke the discipline, failed to enter the team, etc. In comparison, the second book selected a lot of happy periods of the presenter's life. For instance, he had a happy home life with his parents and elementary school life when he was young, he achieved great academic honor in his college life...All of this support that history is a selection the historian made. Different selections of the events in a period can tell totally different things which just like this two biographies give us quite different ideas of the grow-up story of the presenter.
Furthermore, the professor uses this example to bolster that the events on based on the interpretation of the historian. The first biography interpreted the man’s life negatively by selecting negative events while the second one interpreted the man’s life affirmatively by selecting affirmative events.
In conclusion, the example made in the lecture supports that history is not a record of everything but a selection of events which are based on the interpretation of the historian. |
