选B。。。但是后面 what is much more difficult to determine 为什么不是接are呢，后面不是接the reason for their decoration, the use to which primitive people put the caves, and the meaning of the magnificently depicted animals三个并列么，不是该复数么。。求解答

the subject is "what is much more difficult to determine", which is considered singular.

you cannot flip a sentence when it begins with a clause

Manhattan SC, ch.3: sometimes the subject of a sentence is an-ing phrase or even a whole clause. This sort of subject is always singular and requires a singular verb form.
