answer: D  我选E and so 很不标准阿 再说allow sb to do sth 很常用阿

If you have seen all the discussions before, you should find out that most of the people chose E.

However, in my humble opinion,neither D or E is perfect.
 

D's mistake is "allows that," which means an action that doesn't match the idea of this context.

E's problem is "so that," which doesn't carry the original logical meaning of the context. It gives people the wrong idea that the turtle's design permits the attackers not to find its head. Further more, there shouldn't be a coma in front of "so that."

A better choice should be like the following:

The particular design of muscles and bones in the neck and limbs of the turtle
allows it to draw in its exposed parts, and so attacker can find nothing

I don't think you can use "so that" in this sentence. Actually   "so" and "so that" don't come up with the same meaning. 

E中省略了情态动词can，不知道是不是这个原因

allow that是感觉怪怪的，但是能查到有这样的说法

collins查到的：allow that: if you allow that something is true, you admit or agree that it is true.

即承认一个事实的真实性。

而这句话的意思是使得龟龟能收回它的暴露部分。

所以，虽然有allow that的用法，但意思在这里不对。 

表结果的三种表示方式：

..., with the result..

..., so that...

..., doing ....
