Is full compliance with the highest standards of ethics the most effective way for a businessperson to maximize profits in the long run? I agree with author's general assertion that behaving ethically can bring benefits for the company in some cases. However, the author extends the broad assertion to an irreversible extreme while neglecting other crucial factors that may greatly influence the problem. In fact, the problem of whether full compliance with the highest standards is the most effective way to maximize the long-term profits is so complicated that the final judgment should rely on a case-by-case analysis. On balance, I agree that to some extent follow basic standards of ethics is one of approaches to bring benefits to the company, but it does not mean that full compliance with the highest standards of ethics is the most effective way to maximize profits.
Admittedly, I would like to admit that the statement, although suffers from some obvious drawbacks, has some merits primarily in some special cases in which the implicit rationale behind it accords with common sense and our experience in daily life. Hence it is partially indisputable. After all, following some basic norms of business ethics does bring some benefits for a company. For example, honesty and reliability help a company build a good reputation and win repeat business; treating employees fairly and with respect can gain their commitment with the company which, in turn, translates into high productivity.
However, all the evidence cited above does not prove that the full compliance with the highest standards of ethics is the most effective way to maximize long term profits at any time. Indeed, following the highest standards of ethics is in compatible to business objective in some cases by the different objectives of business activity and ethics. Business is fundamentally driven by the maximum profits. However, the ethics norms often starts with public welfare, which means that in some cases an individual has to sacrifice his personal interest if he wants to follow ethics norms. Therefore, it is unsafe to draw a conclusion that following the highest standards of ethics can benefit business in any occasion.
In summary, due to the reasons discussed above, it is safe to conclude that to some extent follow basic standards of ethics is one of approaches to bring benefits to the company, but it does not mean that all of high ethical standards can effectively bring benefits to the company in any occasion. The final judgment on whether or not to follow a certain ethical norms requires a case-by-case analysis and keep in mind other business related factors, such as the business objectives and cost of following the standards. 大家提点意见啊。 ![](/static/legacy-emoticon/Dvbbs/em11.gif) ![](/static/legacy-emoticon/Dvbbs/em11.gif)
