The author addresses a recently published survey that 79 percent of the nearly 1,200 workers expressed a high level of interest in the topics of corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs. Then the author concludes a statement that it is false opinion that workers are generally apathetic about management issues. The line of reasoning is not convincing, since two flaws are included.
First, the survey alone can not substantially present the attitude of workers toword management is changing. For example, the interviewed workers in the survey might not present the general thought of all the workers in the corporation. It might be the case that only those workers who were interested in management topics such as corporate restructuring and redisign of benefits programs joined the survey; while others who felt indifferent in these issues might not. The number of the surveyees might account for a small portion of the whole worker pool. in another words, the total number of the employees in this corporation is around 10,000. Obviously, the survey can not present the majority of all the workers in the corporation.
Secondly, that 79 percent of the 1,200 workers expressed interest in corporate restructuring and redesign of benefits programs does not necessarily mean that workers are pathetic about management issues. The common sense and observation tell us that management involves various respects, such as logistics, manufacturing, service and R & D. The interest of workers toward benifits program might imply that workers pay much more attention to their personal benefit rather than the development of the corporation.
As a result, the author's conclusion based on this survey is not sound. The survery alone does not constitute a logical and complete argument. To strengthen the argument, the author would have proved that the survey can present the general attitude of workers. More examples in other respects shall be illustrated to show workers are indeed in corporation management issues.
