答案是D，觉得those用在这里没道理啊，难道指代light？

这里如果把D选项改成 (D) than those detected 可以吗？

句子就成了： Once positioned in space, the Hubble Space Telescope will capture light from sources twenty times fainter than those detected by ground-based instruments.

(B) compared to those they can detect

(C) than that can be detected

(D) than those detected   

(E) than those detecting

如果改成以上的形式，D还是对的。因为虽然它少了can，意思上有所变化，变为“被发现的”（有can 是“可能会被发现的”），但是所有选项比较起来，D选项，还是对的。

所以，我认为：并不是A选项中有can，答案选项中必定有can
