我选e,首先排除有instead的。不通。后来想了一下，应该是这个原因：

原句明显前后有对比。对比应该尽量平行。如果用分号隔成两个独立的句子，应该分别结构平行。显然A, C不是。B结构不对，D没有转折词，体现不了对比。E是一句话，other than 前后对应，平行，所以D对。

=====c好把，你看E，的other than what is it, 虽然说ETS喜欢用OTHER THAN，但是也不能闭着眼睛选把。other than what is it, 表明什么意思呢？而且还有个逗号，再说，a tool for private conversation,，这个a tool 有歧义，可以指 radio也可以指telephone啊。。。越看C对。。。。instand，是“然而”而且后面还用了has become 说明已经存在radio是接下来的情况，而不是前面的情况，句子间连贯哩。。。。

我也选E。

C中的that我觉得不对。直接接在conversation 后面就是指conversation 了。但是that  应该指tool。 而且我认为后面的has become 时态不好。radio是大众交流工具。这是个事实。不是说radio以前是，而现在不是了。我认为用一般现在时好。E中就用了other than what it is. it 指中心词radio.
