出现because的主句中有否定词，可能会引起歧义

(A) Young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits caused by the desire to be as thin as possible.
(B) Good eating habits sometimes fail to be maintained by young female ballet dancers and gymnasts caused by desiring to be as thin as possible.
(C) Because they desire to be as thin as possible, good eating habits are sometimes not maintained by young female ballet dancers and gymnasts.
(D) Because they desire to be as thin as possible, young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits.
(E) Young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits because they desire to be as thin as possible.
想问一下有人知道为什么这道题的E选项不对吗？感觉E和正确答案D之间只是换了顺序，虽然because直接跟在主句后面的时候前面有否定词会造成歧义，但是这里只是给了fail也会引起歧义吗？还是说E选项根本不是通过这个点来排除的。

首先，你说到的歧义问题是存在的，否定句中实际上是一种特例，语法上有个术语叫做【否定转移】，但其实并不限于否定句，而是多层修饰的情况下，缺乏明确的层次标志就可能造成。什么意思呢？先说否定转移的例子：

Mary does love Eddy because he is rich.

这句话实际上有两种潜在的解读：

【Mary does not love Eddy 】because he is rich.

因为Eddy是土豪，所以Mary不喜欢他。（看来Mary追求纯粹的爱情，嫌弃土豪）

从语法上说，这个解读是先把【Mary does not love Eddy 】当做一个整体意群，然后because从句修饰前面这个整体意群；

另一种解读：

Mary does not【love Eddy because he is rich】.

Mary不是因为Eddy有钱而爱他的。（Mary是爱Eddy的，但不是爱他的钱而是爱他的人，我觉得我也是这种人嗯）。

从语法上说，这种理解是先考虑because从句修饰love这个动作本身，然后【love Eddy because he is rich】构成整体意群被not否定，这就是所谓的否定转移。

换句话说，潜在歧义的根源在于：because从句到底是单独在修饰love，还是在修饰does not love这个整体。

实际上，修饰层次/主从句层次多的情况下，这样强行往后堆积理论上一定程度上都存在这样的歧义：

The teacher told Tom to clean the classroom in the morning.

其实同样可以理解为The teacher told Tom to 【clean the classroom in the morning】.
或者【The teacher told Tom to clean the classroom】 in the morning.

也就是说，单从语法上来说，in the morning既可以修饰非谓语动词clean也可以修饰谓语told。在这种情况下，甚至习惯上会优先考虑就近修饰clean。

但是如果作者就想说是老师上午告诉Tom要打扫，但没规定打扫的时间，实际上只要把In the morning换一下位置：

In the morning, the teacher told Tom to clean the classroom.

你看，这样句首加逗号，实际上就构成了层次标志，避免了潜在歧义。而且正是由于修饰told有这种清晰无歧义的表达方式，native的阅读习惯也会默认放在句尾优先考虑修饰clean。

这题E同样存在这样的问题：because从句到底是在修饰maitain还是fail to maitain，句义是不一样的，存在潜在歧义。

当然，E还有一个歧义点，就是they。这一点站在非native可能有点不好体会，因为非native去理解指代都是看完所有词后一个个找。但实际上native读的过程并不是这样：D当中先在从句中出现they，只能向后指代，这种情况语言习惯上读者会预期后面主句主语就是they的平行指代对象的；但是E当中的they，由于就近有habits，而平行指代又有dancers，实际上读者读到这里是会有困惑的。不过指代问题相对而言是轻微问题，尤其是这里如果读者往后读，读到desire to be as thin as possible，从句义common sense层面还是会得知一定是在说人而不是指习惯。只是从阅读效率来说，造成了读者读到they的时候困惑了一小下，效率不如无歧义的指代方式。
