1. Price are expected to be higherthis year than last
2. Price are 1.3% higher now than those of a year ago
两个都是OG上的句子，想问第二个句子为什么不能写成now than a year ago呢？

可以啊，those of 可以省略，但你的主语是不是PRICES？

What are we comparing? We are comparing prices a year ago with prices this year. It is illogical to compare [prices] with [a year].

Remember you MUST ALWAYS go into both grammar and context when solving comparison/parallelism questions. Think about below 2 examples:

- The total 【amount of grain imports】 last year is greater than 【this year】

- The total 【amount of grain imports】 last year is greater than 【that of this year】

你觉得哪个是对的呢？仔细想一想我们在比较什么。

That of, those of 这两个指代的是主句的subject.
