答案是E, 我选的正确，但是觉得OG的解释不太理解。。。
根据时间的逻辑顺序，前半句话用了过去完成，那么后半句出现了时间点就应该用过去时，所以排除B
然后说until almost 1900的位置不对，不知道是用来修饰第一个动词还是后面的动词。。。对于这个解释有点不理解了。。

个人认为这句话应该理解成it was not until的强调句，通过整句话的逻辑意思理解，用强调句更能突出直到。。。时候才。。。的意思，所以用E最好

还有一个问题，就是C如果改成 not until almost 1900 did scholars and critics begin seriously to study 对不对，用not until的倒装句，请牛牛们指教~~~~

我的看法 until almost 1900属于介词短语，在句中作状语 可以往前修饰从句 也可以往后修饰主句

这里犯了“夹心”错误  

我们可以这样理解：1.虽然18，19世纪的美国诗人就对当地诗歌感兴趣并意图模仿，直到1900，学者才开始学习。。

                    (这里是指学者从18.19世纪直到1900都感兴趣并意图模仿）

                  2.虽然18，19世纪的美国诗人就对当地诗歌感兴趣并意图模仿，直到1900，学者才开始学习。。

                    (这里是指学者只在18，19世纪感兴趣，但是到1900才开始学习）

很明显，这两句的含义和强调重心都是不一样的，所以又歧义

而E用强调句使这里修饰对象单一，所以更清晰

个人认为C那样改过是可以的，倒装强调的是倒装部分 强调句强调的是强调部分 所以这两个重心一致
