due to的问题

2015.09.24 RON SC中对due to进行讲解时举了一个例子。
I was delayed by traffic because of the unexpected length of the afternoon meeting. 讲解中提到这一句当中的because of 不能换成due to 为什么呢？

due to= be caused by

I was delayed by traffic because of the unexpected length of the afternoon meeting.= I was delayed by traffic caused by the unexpected length of the afternoon meeting.
歧义很明显：
traffic was caused by the unexpected length of the afternoon meeting

“because of+后面的内容”相当于状语，修饰的是“i was delayed by traffic",

"due to" 相当于形容词，修饰的是“traffic”

“the unexpected length of the afternoon meeting”是“delayed by traffic”的原因，而不是"traffic"的原因
