答案是D，我想知道
1）为什么than后面可以省略比较对象diet，也不用加代词
我可以把that加上吗？ that has at least 30 percent fewer calories than that they would normally eat but that otherwise
2）OG解释说E的that 会指代到 calories ：The singular relative pronoun that nonsensically refers to the plural calories
不是很能理解为什么

个人理解，仅供参考：
1、（they were)fed a diet 和 they would normally eat 比较，如果than that they would normally eat 也可以，这时候是和 calories 比较，但后面的that要省略，而且原文的动词是contains，又矛盾了；
2、E项 though that otherwise contains，说明that是单数，前面一个that， though又出现一个that，这两个的指代应该一致，说的是一样东西，这里只能指代的是calories ，是复数名词，因此不正确。

问题一：原则上，省略的都是前面出现过的。省略了，应该是可以还原回来的。
但是，个人认为在这里补出了之后不太好，涉及到指代的问题，如果that指代的是diet的话，那么后面they would normally eat是定语，是不是还要有一个定语从句的关系代词来引导？
所以补出的话，最好应该是 than a diet that they eat。。。
至于后面的but that 这个that是引导定语从句的关系代词，是跟第一个diet that平行的，所以没问题。
印象中类似于这样的题目，不是这一道，prep中还有。
问题二：
that which这样的结构我印象中，所有世面上的题目，都没有成为正确选项。这至少说明了，这个表达肯定不是受到gmac青睐的。
至于错误点在哪里呢？
that指代的是什么呢？that 如果指代的是diet，用which引导的限制性定语从句的修饰嘛？然后which又指代的是diet，是不是语义上是重复的？
在我们清晰的知道which后面修饰的是diet，那么which指代的就是diet，那么前面的that就不应该再指向diet了，这也就是为什么OG说that会指代其他的名词

谢谢！解释得很好
但是我不理解第一个问题，我加上that就是想让它做关系代词， a diet that has at least 30 percent fewer calories than that they would normally eat
就是两个diet之间的比较，所以不需要再加个指代的代词或者说直接还原a diet了

嗯。。。我思考了挺久的。像这样省略的，楼主可以找出所有的题目来看看，如果我没有记错的话，省略了比较对象（不用that）的这一种，都是比较的是同一个事物，在不同状态下的的情况。涉及到了定语，那么说明是两个东西，不能够省略，都会补出that those或者要比较的名词。所以这里，个人还是认为不能够直接用that。
