有一个理解不知道对不对：

a选项里的they指代的是前面句中的children，也就是说1981和1997的children是同一拨children，但实际上指代的并不是同一群人，而是泛指“children”这个年龄段的人。因为1981的那群小孩到1997已经不是小孩了，因此不能用代词they

至于为什么1981用过去时，1997用过去完成时，（过去完成时不是发生在过去时之前吗）我的理解是因为有分号所以表示两个独立的句子？所以1981和1997用的两个时态不一定要符合同一个时间框架？这里不懂，求nn解答

感觉对they的解释可以接受。对于时态的解释我之前看曼哈顿第五版语法书的时候，里头有说过这样一段-----有时候我们可以在前一个分句中用一般过去时表示“过去”，在后一个分句中
用过去完成时表示从“过去”一直延续下去。即一般过去时在过去完成时之前。【附上之前在论坛上看到的别人举的例句：EG: The band U2 was one of many new groups on the rock music scene in the early 1980's, but less than ten years later, U2 had fully eclipsed its early rivals in the pantheon of popular music.】

关于时态：1，两个独立的句子；2，tense indicators: in 1981 过去时；by 1997 过去完成式。they 的话我感觉是指代不清晰 children or chores 所以不能用they
