我的疑惑点：为什么用them而不用themselves

我的理解：

allowing这里是作结果状语修饰前面的句子

从逻辑语义上：可以判断这句话是说数学家可以用电脑测试这些非常复杂的案例的这件事允许数学家去探索这些问题，而不是数学家们自己允许自己去探索，所以才不用themselves，而用them。

语法角度：因为“comma+ doing”中的”doing”这里修饰的是整句话，所以不用考虑逻辑主语问题

但是又看到ManhattanSC 上一个例句：P64

The engineer fixed theproblem, earning himself a promotion.

（Explanation）:Because the engineer fixed the problem, he earned apromotion. Fixing the problem resulted in earning the promotion

这两句话结构有区别吗，感觉有点矛盾，还是说2种用法都可以接受…

(VERB) 在…探险;探测;勘察;考察 If you explore a place, you travel around it to find out what it is like.
