关于代词指代不清的小疑惑

正确选项是E。
我在D和E之间纠结的时候，想起prep07语法笔记里是这么说指代不清的：当一个代词可以指代多个对象时，它优先指代离它较近代的对象，如果就近指代会导致逻辑意思的错误，则可以肯定该选项犯有指代不清的错误。
然后我就觉得E选项的they离similar patterns比离other animals更近，但实际上they应该指代更远的other animals，这样就犯了指代不清的错误。但是这是正确选项。
所以想请教一下问题出在什么地方。是这条规则并不是对与错之分，而是好与不够好之分？还是因为D有三个flaws错的更多？指代不清到底能不能算作排除选项的决定性因素？还是我理解错了，E选项根本没有指代不清？
