I wanted to share this story in case anyone is feeling a little hopeless and blue about grad school applications.

When I was working at MIT, I actually once saw an application that almost got rejected because of the GPA. The applicant was from Tsinghua. Every single comment on it was...NO - GPA too low, TOEFL too low.  But then one of the professors on the adcom was joking around with his phd student, who was also from Tsinghua. At first it was a joke. The professor said things like "why did he even apply, wasting his own money." The PhD student laughed along. After a while, the PhD student said can I see the package. After reviewing it the PhD student said.."actually my GPA was about that high in undergrad. If you reject him, you  may be missing out on someone like me." Because of this statement, the application was admitted and the applicant graduated from MIT three years ago. Sometimes, you don't know what might happen. Good luck everyone!!

Hi, I've read some of your articles, it's really helpful. But I've a question that you didn't mention. It might be quite unique. So I thought maybe I can ask you directly. My question is my GPA is 3.4, but I've worked for almost 3 years. So is my GPA still a obvious weakness when I'm applying a top MSF or MFE program? I've checked the class profile of some programs, most of the students have a GPA about 3.8...
