题目：

In the seventh century B.C., the Roman alphabet was adapted from the Etruscan
alphabet, which in turn had been adapted in the previous century from a western
Greek alphabet, which itself had been adapted earlier in the same century from the
Phoenician alphabet.
(A) which itself had been adapted earlier
(B) adapting itself earlier
(C) itself being adapted earlier
(D) having been earlier adapted itself
(E) earlier itself having been adapted

疑问：对于答案A，倒是可以通过几种方法做出来。但是我想问一下大家，A选项既然是一个which的非限定性定语从句，which指代Greek alphabet，那么为什么后面
要有一个itself的反身代词？？这里的itself是做什么成份呢？

请教一下大家，还希望有NN帮忙解答一下，谢谢！！

itself 用在这里是一个强调，也是避免和前面句式简单重复。如果我们中文这么说，也会在语言上有个递进强调。

先说
the Etruscan alphabet, which in turn had been adapted ... from a western Greek alphabet,
再说：
a western Greek alphabet, which had been adapted ...
a western Greek alphabet, which itself had been adapted ...
如果不加itself, 会有简单重复前句话，读起来不舒服
语言是用来表达的。这点英文和中文都会是一样的。建议不要孤立地去按语法知识学习语法，不管itself放这是什么成分，可以不可以。而是领会怎么说写语言可以完整精确地表达句意。翻译中有信达雅。语言应用中也可以有类似理解。简单明了，不无谓重复等。孤立语法点可以的东西，放着一个实际句子如果和其它部分结合使用不合理，还是会错的。

谢谢版主！看完很有启发。对于D答案，这个link里面解释的不是很多，我又参考了一下OG的解释，

OG对D选项的解释：Without commas around itself, the pronoun appears to be reflexive. The
combination of passive and reflexive then makes no sense. If itself is
intended simply for emphasis, rather than as a reflexive pronoun, it would
be preferable, in this context, to set it off with commas. But if it were
intended in that way, it would seem to refer to the Roman alphabet, and the
claim made in the sentence would be confusing and nearly nonsensical. This
modifier is confusingly placed before the designation of time (in the same
century) and source (from the Phoenician alphabet).

我排除D的原因：
1. having been done出现在comma之后，是一个verb modifer，同时having 要apply to 主语（Roman alphabet）, 也就是modifer 主句Roman 那一部分。但是原句的语义显然是describe Greek alphabet，产生矛盾。

2.根据OG解释，itself 有两种用法，第一是反身代词，第二是为了强调。如果是第一种的话，那么D选项中反身代词和被动语态同时出现，则矛盾。如果第二种强调的话，itself指代Roman alphabet【这里只能指代Roman的原因我想应该是由于comma, doing结构中，doing要apply to 主语的原因】，这和原句的语义相矛盾。

以上两点，排除了D。

不知道我的理解是不是对的，写的有点长，还麻烦版主帮忙看一下，谢谢！！
