【求助】OG17第695题of的用法

hello 各位~ 求问：og17 sc 695题
By 1940, the pilot Jacqueline Cochran held seventeen official national and international speed records, and she earned them at a time when aviation was still so new for many of the planes she flew to be of dangerously experimental design.

根据其他问题能选择出答案E，但我不明白of在句子中有什么作用？
一般be of后面加一个抽象名词相当一个形容词，不过在这里好像不是这个用法，请教NN们~~~

浅浅的说一下，我认为这里的be of dangerously experimental design 就是把be of +adv =adj来用的，即dangerous experimental design
另外这题的考点也不是这个，要注意分解句子结构 the plane (she flew) were of dangerously experimental design

当然不对，要用when，前面都说了是time了啊~
时间用when，地点用where，物用which

请问B错的地方是time 不能用that吗？还是earning用得不对必须用earned修饰records？我怎么感觉用earning修饰人或者用earned修饰records都对的感觉？

可是一般-ing form的主语都是和主句保持一致的呀……v-ing可以指代的是前面证据话，这不是它和coma which区分的一个区别之一吗？
