an age要在句中做时间状语的话必须有介词，所以要用in which，或者用还原法来理解。

an age in which great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas
句中which 指代an age 代入还原：great ice sheets has existed in what are now temperate areas in an age.

如果将in which换成when 指代an age，还原后：
great ice sheets existed in what are now temperate areas an age.
孤立的an age无法在句中做时间状语。

句中what is now/what are now是一固定用法，由于what=the thing which，因此它在句中可以作两个成分，这里既是what are now 中的主语，又作介词in 的宾语。

对了，WHAT ＝THE THING WHICH.那在这句中不就是EXISTED IN THE THING ......,存在于THING,这样用翻译起来好像挺别扭的。
