1.It is called a sea, but the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, which covers more than four times the surface area of its closest rival in size,
North America’s Lake Superior.

(B) Although it is called a sea, actually the landlocked Caspian is the largest lake on Earth, which covers
(C) Though called a sea, the landlocked Caspian is actually the largest lake on Earth, covering(CORRECT)
(D) Though called a sea but it actually is the largest lake on Earth, the landlocked Caspian covers
(E) Despite being called a sea, the largest lake on Earth is actually the landlocked Caspian, covering

千行的manhattan的知识点:When an introductory modifier includes a pronoun without an antecedent, the referent for the pronoun must be the FIRST WORD of the main clause.
To my knowledge, NO OFFICIAL ANSWER has not abided by this rule.
Here, the introductory modifier (although IT is called a sea) includes a pronoun without an antecedent (it), but the first word of the main clause (actually) is not the referent for this pronoun. Eliminate B.

上面这题的曼哈顿知识点是在某位大神的OG千行上看到(对不起,下的时间太久,不记得是哪位大神了!)按这个知识点,运用到下面这道题中,那正确选项中也同样是introductory modifier includes a pronoun without an antecedent “it”,为什么可以以 Josephine Baker作为主语,而不是Paris。

2. To Josephine Baker, Paris was her home long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, and she remained in France during the Second World War as a
performer and an intelligence agent for the Resistance.
(A) To Josephine Baker, Paris was her home long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate,
(B) For Josephine Baker, long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Paris was her home,
(C) Josephine Baker made Paris her home long before to be an expatriate was fashionable,
(D) Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Josephine Baker made Paris her home,(CORRECT)
(E) Long before it was fashionable being an expatriate, Paris was home to Josephine Baker,

OG解释:D Correct. The clearest, most economical order for this sentence is to put the adverb clause first, and make Baker the subject of the first main clause, parallel to she in the second.

Thank you in advance!!!

第6版Manhattanprep - sentence correction这本书第196页写了以下知识点,希望对你有所帮助:

Some sentences use what is called 'a placeholder it', also known as a dummy pronoun. For example, when you say, "It's cold outside,", that 'it' doesn't stand for any noun. Therefore, a placeholder 'it' doesn't have to have an antecedent.
Here are the three situations in which you might want to use placeholder 'it' on GMAT:
1. postpone infinitive subjects (太多了,不全打了,挑他的example给你)
Awkward: TO RESIST temptation is futile
Better: IT is futile to resist temptation

2. postpone 'that-clause' subjects
Awkward: THAT we scored at all gave us encouragement
Better: IT gave us encouragement that we scored at all

3. postpone infinitive or 'That-clause' objects
Right: She made IT possible for us to attend the movie.
You cannot say this sentence any other way, unless you change the infinitive phrase 'to attend' into the action noun 'attendance'. Then you should drop the placeholder 'it'.
