Proof of Proficiency in English

The language of instruction for most courses at McGill is English; however, students are allowed to write term papers, examinations and theses in English or in French except in courses where knowledge of the language is one of the objectives of the course.

Students educated in several different languages may be required to provide proof of proficiency in English. Normally, applicants meeting any of the following conditions are not required to submit proof of proficiency in English:

• Their mother tongue/first language is English

OR

• They have completed a Diploma of Collegial Studies at an English language CEGEP during or later than 2003

OR

• They have completed both Secondary V and a Diploma of Collegial Studies in Quebec

OR

• Their mother tongue/first language is English and they have completed the last five years of study in a French Baccalaureate International Option program, or in a French Lycée located in an English speaking country

OR

• Their last five years of study (preceding application) have been at a learning institution where English is the main language of instruction (including applicants taught in English in Kenya, Liberia and Singapore)

OR

• They have completed A-Level in English, (other than English as a Second Language) with a final grade of C or better.

All other applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English, using one of the following options:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Currently, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Arts, Education (except Teaching of English as a Second Language, which has a higher standard), Engineering, Science, Architecture, Nursing, Physical and Occupational Therapy and Social Work undergraduate programs require a TOEFL score of at least 233 (577 for the paper-based version). Management and Teaching English as a Second Language in Education require at least 250 (600 for the paper-based version). The Faculty of Music minimum score is 213 (550 for the paper-based version).
