4. It has been said, "Not everything that is learned is contained in books." Compare and contrast knowledge gained from experience with knowledge gained from books. In your opinion, which source is more important? Why?
Books and experience are two major sources to absorb knowledge. When we meet the controversy of which one is more important to us, different people have various answers. The majority of us might believe that books are more important because books are easily accessible and contain a wider range of knowledge. Compared with the pros and cons of the two sources, however, I stand on the opposite side of the majority.
Admittedly, books could be effective channels to learn specific knowledge as their proponents asserted. As we know, knowledge in books is abundant and is regarded as no bounds. In libraries and bookstores we can find numerous books containing all sorts of knowledge such as history, politics, and mathematics etc. Undoubtedly knowledge in books is far beyond the individual’s limitation. However, books also have significant drawbacks. For instance, the knowledge in books can not keep pace with the development of the society and the technology. Thus the knowledge in books can easily out of date. Ironically, when a new book is finished, the knowledge might be already obsolete
On the hand, experience may be more important as a source for us to learn knowledge. First, only through practice can we convert the knowledge from books into our minds. For example if we only read books of how to swim but never go to the swim pool to practice what we learned for the book, it is clear that we can never acquire the skill of swimming. In fact, through the lessons we learned in our life, that is the experience, we become more wise and knowledgeable. Secondly, knowledge gained from experience is much more impressive to us. Hardly can we forget what we learned from experience. Take me as an example, I learned to ride bicycle when I was only 5, but the skill I learned is still fresh to me today. Moreover, learning from experience is efficient. For example, we may need two days or longer to understand and learn how to use the Windows from a thick text book. However, if we are sitting in front of a computer we may only need 2 hours to familiar with if.
After all the analysis above, we can safely reach the conclusion that experience is a much more important source to absorb knowledge. The knowledge we gained form experience is concrete, practical and impressive which will be greatly helpful to us. |
